The Obligatory Nature of Hajj

    The advent of the month of Shawwāl brings with it the remembrance of Ibrāhīm ‘alayhis salām and his memorable hajj. All over the world, those who are fortunate make preparations for this great spiritual experience. Hajj is from the five pillars of Islām and is fard upon every sane and mature believer who possesses the means to perform hajj.

    Allāh ta‘ālā mentions in the Glorious Qur’ān: 
     “…As a right of Allāh, it is obligatory on the people to perform hajj of the House – on everyone who has the ability to manage (his) way to it.” (3:97)

    The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has said:
    “Islām is founded on five (pillars): 
    bearing witness that there is no deity except Allāh and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allāh,
    establishing salāh, 
    paying zakāh, 
    performing hajj and 
    fasting in the month of Ramadān.” (Al-Bukhārī)

    In another hadīth, he said: “O people! Indeed Allāh, the Mighty, the Exalted has made hajj obligatory upon you; therefore perform hajj.” (Ahmad)

    Virtues of Hajj

    The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has mentioned many virtues of hajj, encouraging the believers to fulfil this obligation:

    “The performers of hajj and ‘umrah are deputations of Allāh. If they call Him, He answers them; and if they seek His forgiveness, He forgives them.” (Ibn Mājah)

    “There is no reward for an accepted hajj except Jannah.” (Al-Bukhārī, Muslim)

    “Whoever performs hajj for the sake of pleasing Allāh, and therein utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it free from sin as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.” (Al-Bukhārī, Muslim)

    The performer of hajj becomes so pure that even that person is forgiven for whom he seeks forgiveness. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
    “When you meet a Hajī (on his way home), then greet him, shake hands with him and ask him to beg forgiveness of Allāh on your behalf before he enters his home, for his prayer for forgiveness is accepted since he is forgiven by Allāh.” (Ahmad)

    Warnings for Non-performance of Hajj

    The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has also warned those who do not fulfil this obligation despite it becoming obligatory upon them:

    “He who possesses enough provisions which will suffice for him to reach the House of Allāh, and he does not perform hajj, then there is no care whether he dies as a Jew or a Christian.” (At-Tirmidhī)

    Hajj is fard upon every sane, adult and healthy Muslim, when he has sufficient wealth to enable him to travel to and from the Ka‘bah. This will apply when the wealth required to take him is in excess of his needs (such as house, transport, clothing, etc.). He also needs to have sufficient wealth to leave behind for the needs of those who are dependent on him. Furthermore, the journey needs to be a safe one and a woman needs to be travelling with a mahram. As can be understood from the great virtues and stern warnings above, a person upon whom hajj is fard should endeavour to perform hajj at the earliest possible opportunity – this year. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has said:

    “The one who intends to go for hajj should hurry; for sometimes he can get ill, his conveyance can go missing or some other obstacle may arise (which will hinder him from travelling).” (Ahmad)

    Misconceptions and Lame Excuses

    Many people delay the performance of hajj due to misconceptions which become lame excuses for not performing hajj. Inshā’allāh, I wish to clarify a few of these misunderstandings, so that those who find themselves in these situations can repent and make preparations immediately.

    • Many people have enough wealth for them to go for hajj, but they wait to accrue enough wealth so that their spouse can also accompany them. If the husband has enough wealth then he should go for hajj immediately. And if the wife has enough wealth, and she has other mahārim with whom she can go for hajj, then she should go immediately too. The Sharī‘ah does not give either permission to postpone the hajj and wait for the other.

    • Many people think that it is necessary that they make arrangements for their parents to perform hajj before they do. This too is incorrect in light of the Sharī‘ah. Undoubtedly, to make one’s parents perform hajj is a great virtue and honour; however, if hajj is not fard on them, but it is fard upon the children, then they should not concern themselves with their parents’ hajj at this moment and fulfil their own obligation. It is possible that in the children waiting for the parents - or in the case of the husband waiting for the wife or vice versa - the one upon whom hajj is fard passes away and is questioned by Allāh ta‘ālā for its non-fulfilment.

    • Others delay embarking on the journey until certain worldly tasks have been completed. Remember! The targets of the world will never end. If it is one worldly target that is the excuse this year, then it will be another next year. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has said: 
    “No servant leaves hajj for some worldly objective but that he will see the people returning from hajj before his worldly objective is fulfilled.” (At-Tabrānī)
    Therefore, one should put aside any worldly goals he has in mind and fulfil the obligation of Allāh ta‘ālā first. It is also noteworthy to remember that it is from the ploys of Shaytān that he will never say, ‘Don’t perform hajj’, rather, he will make you defer its performance, year after year, until it’s too late.

    • Similarly, many delay their hajj because of this hadīth:
    “He who performs forty salāh in my masjid in such a way that he does not miss a single salāh, then Allāh prescribes his freedom from the Fire of Jahannam, freedom from punishment and freedom from hypocrisy.” (Ahmad) 

    Many think that it is necessary to perform forty salāh in Al-Masjid An-Nabawī, and some have the desire and greed for this virtue, so they delay their performance of hajj as they cannot spare enough time or money to stay in Al-Madīnah for the duration of forty salāh. Hajj is for five days only, and it becomes fard upon that person who can only afford to go for the minimum time. The inability to travel to Al-Madīnah will not be a valid excuse not to perform hajj. Of course, after reaching so close to the blessed city of Al-Madīnah, one should endeavour to at least spend a day in the blessed city and visit Al-Masjid An-Nabawī, and present himself in the Court of Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam.

    • Some believe that if their children have reached a marriageable age and are not yet married, then the parents cannot perform hajj until the children are married. This too has no basis whatsoever in the Sharī‘ah. 

    • Some delay in travelling as they have small children at home. Once hajj becomes fard, they should seek suitable relatives, friends, etc. who can look after their children whilst they go for hajj; and they need not travel for long due to their circumstance and situation.

    • Some delay their hajj as they think it is better to perform it in their old age closer to their death! This is a fallacy as they have no guarantee for how long they will live, and this idea is in complete contrast to the command of the Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam to perform hajj at the earliest opportunity.

    • Some delay performing the hajj as they only obtain a set number of days off work, and they postpone their journey hoping that they may get more days off next year and can spend more time in the Al-Haramayn. This too is not a valid Shar‘ī reason to postpone the hajj. They should go and spend whatever time they have available and absolve themselves of the obligation of hajj.

    • Some delay the hajj, as they cannot afford to buy gifts for people, thus deferring their obligation until they have enough money that they can buy gifts for their loved and dear ones. This again is not a valid Shar‘ī excuse.

    • Some delay in going for hajj as they cannot afford the ‘five star’, ‘deluxe’ or ‘golden’ package. From a Shar‘ī point of view, as soon as they can afford the cheapest most basic package, hajj becomes fard upon them.

    • Others can afford a package, but as the package includes a hotel which is far from the Al-Haram, they are not able to read all five salāh in Al-Haram. This does not justify delaying the hajj. Remember, as long as the five days of hajj are part of the package, hajj will be fard upon them. 

    • Some do not go for hajj on the pretext that they are not yet ready to change their lives. Such a thought is from Shaytān. Do we think the same when it comes to reading salāh or paying zakāh? And if this is the case, then change your life, for it is obligatory anyway! Moreover, inshā’allāh, through the barakah of hajj, the life will change for the better. Some go to the other extreme and have resolved to change their lives, but make comments such as, ‘My Īmān is not yet strong enough and I need to build on my Īmān.’ This thought too is from Shaytān. Hajj is a very important fundamental which helps to make one’s Īmān stronger.

    Shaykh Muftī ‘Abdur Rahīm Lājpūrī rahimahullāh mentions with regards the permissible reasons for postponing hajj:
    The following are reasons for which hajj may be postponed:
    • Becoming bankrupt.
    • Fear of a tyrannical leader.
    • Being imprisoned.
    • An unsafe journey.
    • Illness because of which the person cannot travel.
    • For a woman not to have a mahram or husband to accompany her.
    • For a woman to be sitting in her ‘iddah.

    He further states that although these factors justify postponing hajj; however, it will be compulsory to proceed with the journey as soon as they no longer exist.

    Therefore, it is my heartfelt plea to those upon whom hajj is fard, that they embark on this blessed journey this very year. They should have trust in Allāh ta‘ālā for all their affairs and fulfil this obligation. 

    May Allāh ta‘ālā remove all difficulties and hurdles that anyone may have and make hajj easy for one and all.

    Sexuality & Society


     Sexualization and its Effect on the Family and Society 

    Women
    The problem of sexualization has developed over the years, which means that young American girls inherit a legacy that has been passed on down by previous generations including women themselves. The negative effect therefore has been:

    • Cognitive function is paid less attention 
    • Dissatisfaction with the body 
    • Compromised mental and physical health 
    • Compromised sense of sexuality, attitudes and beliefs. 
    • Self sexualization and self-objectification by adult women 
    As young girls mature and go out into the world of work they are further compromised. The report provides the following example:

    "In a study it was found that when the sexy job applicant applied for a managerial job, she was rated as less competent and less intelligent than the conservatively dressed job applicant; participants also indicated that they would experience fewer positive emotions, and more negative emotions toward the sexy applicant (compared with the conservatively dressed applicant) if she were hired. None of these differences was found when the applicants were described as applying for a job as receptionists. These data imply that self-sexualization or sexualization by others is likely to have a negative impact on women seeking professional careers".

    Sexualized adult women therefore become partners in "idealizing youth", and the look of youth as the golden age, which once upon a time, used to be the age period over 30s. Supermodels become the societal standard of beauty which women make every effort to live up to.

    "The most famous models became internationally well known before they were 16. Of the six champions on the popular television program America’s Next Top Model (2006) (which requires contestants to be at least 18, presumably for legal reasons), the oldest champion was 23, and the average age of the champions was 20.2. Given this ideal, it is not surprising that as women age, they become increasingly invisible. Many women respond to this cultural standard by making every effort to remain and look as youthful as possible. This shows in the huge increase in sales of “anti-aging” beauty products and plastic surgery rates (especially for procedures that lift and tuck aging body parts).  Even with plastic surgery, it is impossible for an adult woman to maintain the look of a 17-year-old adolescent. This inability to meet the culturally imposed standard of beauty may lead to body shame, lowered self-esteem, and a reduced sense of well-being".

    Two studies have concluded that:

    • Women aged 20 -60 are constantly exposed to advertisements displaying body-focused anxiety than those who were not. 
    • Regular exposure to the media's "White ideal" to women who can not match that i.e. non-Caucasians 
    • Women encountered more ageism "… a 35-year-old woman reported being referred to as “a dried up old maid” 

    Boys and Men

    The sexualization of women, especially by the media has an impact on boys and men as well. From several studies, the report noted that exposure to pornography leads men to:

    • Rate their female partners as less attractive (no marital commitment) 
    • be less satisfied with their partners’ attractiveness, sexual performance, and level of affection 
    • express greater desire for sex without emotional involvement. 
    • Jeopardize men’s ability to form and maintain intimate relationships with women. 
     .
    The report notes that when boys and men see girls and women only as sexual objects, they are unable to relate to other aspects of their nature or characteristics.

    "When one person objectifies another, it is difficult, perhaps even impossible, to treat that person with empathy, an important predictor of satisfaction and stability in intimate relationships".


    Impact on Society

    The report enumerates the societal infrastructures that are affected:
    • Cultural institutions  -  schools and workplaces 
    • Social attitudes - expectations 
    • Social problems – sexual exploitation 
    We often like to perceive ourselves as free-thinking people who make up their own minds; however in general, this is not the case. For instance it was found that:

    • Girls who wore school uniforms got a more favorable response, and were rated more highly academically by their teachers 
    • Girls who wore school uniform had a more positive perception of their safety and their peers 
    • Male undergraduates who read men's magazines tended to sexually objectify women 
    • Both men and women exposed to sexually objectified images (e.g. R- rated material, pornography etc), accepted myths about rape (women invited it through their behavior). 
    • Both male and female students who watched 3 consecutive neutral music videos afterwards perceived men hitting women as a form of sexual harassment 
    • Both male and female students who watched sexist music videos saw sexual advances as being natural. 
    • Sexualized portrayals of girls led to free association of child with sex, even if a child's dress is not sexualized 
    • Exposure to sexualized content affects how women behave, and how men treat women.
    "Undergraduate men exposed to 16 sexist and objectifying commercials later asked more sexist questions of a female confederate posing as a job applicant, recalled more about her appearance and less about her personal background, and rated her as friendlier, more suitable to hire, but less competent than did the controls. Similarly, it was found that after exposure to a 15-minute pornography tape, stereotypically masculine men were perceived by a female experimenter to be more sexually motivated, they positioned themselves closer to her, and they recalled more information about her physical appearance than did men in other situations. Using a similar paradigm, it was reported that a pattern in which gender-typed men appeared to rate a female partner lower on intellectual competence after viewing a sexually explicit film and higher after viewing a nonsexual film".     Schools and the Workplace

    Increasingly we can see in Muslim societies what has been taking place in western societies. The report challenges the belief that dressing sexily brings more freedom, by showing that it achieves the opposite! The report shows how sexual harassment by schoolboys has become a part of daily school life in the form of jokes, leering, touching, grabbing, and commenting on physical features. 

    The report states that:

    "Several studies suggest that the sexualization of girls contributes to sexual harassment and coercion".

    In the workplace it was found that:

    • Men who watched their female counter-parts have low empathy for their "targets". 
    • Males exposed to sexualized portrayals were more likely to sexually harass females 
    • There is increased misperception of friendliness from women as a sign of sexual interest 
    So which came first, the chicken or the egg? If anything, the report demonstrates how easily influenced our sexual identity is, and the price of sexual liberty. Only the family can rebalance the relationship between the individual and society, when advocates of sexual liberty fight to defend a matrix that continually reinvents itself.

    Promiscuity

    Promiscuity is the practice of having casual sex frequently with different partners or being indiscriminate in the choice of sexual partners.

    A word of warning:

    When I first found out the information I’m about to relay to you, I was shocked and sick to my stomach. I kept the post in draft form for months, unable to bring myself to complete it. The great Scottish philosopher David Hume defined “evil” without resorting to theology: Evil is what causes harm or injury to oneself or to another. By that definition, the homosexual behaviors described below are evil.
    Are you ready?
    Take a deep breath. Here we go….


    In his article, “The Health Risks of Gay Sex,” medical doctor John R. Diggs, Jr. writes that “The current media portrayal of gay and lesbian relationships is that they are as healthy, stable and loving as heterosexual marriages — or even more so. Medical associations are promoting somewhat similar messages.” But that portrayal is not consistent with facts.

    Dr. Diggs warns that the consequences of homosexual sexual activity are distinct from the consequences of heterosexual activity. Just as it is his duty as a physician to recommend behaviors that are beneficial to our health and wellbeing, likewise it is his duty to inform patients of the health risks of gay sex — “Sexual relationships between members of the same sex expose gays, lesbians and bisexuals to extreme risks of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), physical injuries, mental disorders and even a shortened life span.”

    There are at least 5 major areas of differences between gay and heterosexual relationships, each with specific medical consequences. Those differences include:
    1. Levels of promiscuity
    2. Physical health
    3. Mental health
    4. Life span
    5. Definition of “monogamy”

    1. Promiscuity

    The “extreme” health risks of homosexual sex are a direct consequence of sexual promiscuity. Simply put, homosexuals are more promiscuous than heterosexuals. Prior to the AIDS epidemic, a 1978 study found that:
    • 75% of white gay males (3 of every 4) claimed to have had more than 100 lifetime male sex partners;
    • 15% claimed 100-249 sex partners;
    • 17% claimed 250-499;
    • 15% claimed 500- 999;
    • 28% (that’s more than 1 of every 5 white gay men!) claimed more than 1,000 lifetime male sex partners.
    Levels of promiscuity subsequently declined but, with the advent of AIDS drugs, they are again approaching those of the 1970s. From 1994 to 1997, the percentage of homosexual men reporting multiple partners and unprotected anal sex rose from 23.6% to 33.3%, with the largest increase among men under 25. The medical consequence of this promiscuity is that gays have a greatly increased likelihood of contracting HIV/AIDS, syphilis and other STDs.

    While similarly high rates of promiscuity have not been documented among lesbians, an Australian study did find lesbians to be more promiscuous than straight women:
    • 93% of lesbians reported having had sex with men. Other studies similarly show that 75-90% of women who have sex with women have also had sex with men.
    • Lesbians were 4.5 times more likely than heterosexual women (9% of lesbians vs. 2% of heterosexual women) to have had more than 50 lifetime male sex partners.
    • In addition to diseases that may be transmitted during lesbian sex, a study at an Australian STD clinic found that lesbians were 3 to 4 times more likely than heterosexual women to have sex with men who were high-risk for HIV.
    It goes without saying that any degree of sexual promiscuity carries the risk of contracting STDs.


    2. Physical Health

    Excessive sexual promiscuity and certain common sexual practices among gay men result in epidemics like AIDS and serious medical consequences, some of which are virtually unknown among heterosexuals. A British researcher summarizes the danger as follows:

    “penile-anal, mouth-penile, and hand-anal sexual contact is usual for both [male homosexual] partners, and mouth-anal contact is not infrequent…. Mouth-anal contact is the reason for the relatively high incidence of diseases caused by bowel pathogens in male homosexuals. Trauma may encourage the entry of micro-organisms and thus lead to primary syphilitic lesions occurring in the anogenital area…. In addition to sodomy, trauma may be caused by foreign bodies, including stimulators of various kinds, penile adornments, and prostheses.”
    a. Anal intercourse:
    Beginning in the “gay” culture, anal sex has now been “popularized” among heterosexuals via systematic propaganda of pornography.

    But the simple truth is this: The human body was not designed to accommodate anal intercourse.
    The rectum is significantly different from the vagina with regard to suitability for penetration by a penis. The vagina has natural lubricants and is composed of a mucus membrane with a multi-layer stratified squamous epithelium that allows it to endure friction without damage and to resist the immunological actions caused by semen and sperm. In contrast, the anus is a delicate mechanism of small muscles that comprise an “exit-only” passage. With repeated trauma, friction and stretching, the sphincter loses its tone and its ability to maintain a tight seal.

    Consequently, anal intercourse leads to leakage of fecal material that can easily become chronic. Moreover, the intestine has only a single layer of cells separating it from blood. Therefore, any organisms that are introduced into the rectum have a much easier time establishing a foothold for infection than they would in a vagina. The single layer tissue cannot withstand the friction associated with penile penetration, resulting in traumas that expose both participants to blood, organisms in feces, and a mixing of bodily fluids.

    Furthermore, ejaculate has components that are immunosuppressive, designed to allow the sperm to evade the immune defenses of the female. The fragility of the anus and rectum, along with the immunosuppressive effect of ejaculate, make anal-genital intercourse a most efficient manner of transmitting HIV and other infections. Below is a list of diseases found with extraordinary frequency among male homosexual practitioners as a result of anal intercourse. Sexual transmission of some of these diseases is so rare in the exclusively heterosexual population as to be virtually unknown. Lesbians are also at higher risk for these STDs:
    • Anal cancer
    • Chlamydia trachomatis
    • Cryptosporidium
    • Giardia lamblia
    • Herpes simplex virus
    • Human immunodeficiency virus
    • Human papilloma virus
    • Isospora belli
    • Microsporidia
    • Gonorrhea
    • Viral hepatitis types B & C
    • Syphilis: gay men contracted syphilis at 3 to 4 times the rate of heterosexuals.
    • HIV/AIDS: A study based upon statistics from 1986 through 1990 estimated that 20-year-old gay men had a 50% chance of becoming HIV positive by age 55. As of June 2001, nearly 64% of men with AIDS were men who have had sex with men.
    b. Oral-anal contact (aka “rimming”):
    It is because of “rimming” that intestinal parasites ordinarily found in the tropics are encountered in the bodies of American gay men. An extremely high rate of parasitic and other intestinal infections is documented among male homosexual practitioners because of oral-anal contact. There are so many infections that a syndrome called “the Gay Bowel” is described in the medical literature. Gay bowel syndrome includes such diseases as Hepatitis A, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba, histolytica, Epstein-Barr virus, Neisseria meningitides, Shigellosis, Salmonellosis, Pediculosis, scabies, Campylobacter, and typhoid.

    c. Human Waste
    Some gay men engage in coprophilia, which means sexual contact with (including ingesting) highly infectious fecal wastes. This practice exposes the participants to all of the risks of anal-oral contact and many of the risks of analgenital contact.

    d. Fisting
    “Fisting” is far more damaging than anal intercourse. Tears can occur, along with incompetence of the anal sphincter. The result can include infections, inflammation and, consequently, enhanced susceptibility to future STDs. 22% of homosexuals (nearly 1 of every 4) in one survey admitted to having participated in this practice.
    Al Pacino and director William Friedkin got a lot of flak from “gay rights” activists for showing the truth in the 1980 movie Cruising, about an undercover cop investigating a serial killer who targets gay men, especially those involved in the S&M “culture.”  If this isn’t evil, I truly don’t know what is.
     
    e. Sadism
    Sadism is the sexualization of pain and cruelty, named for the 18th Century novelist, the Marquis de Sade. The medical consequences of such activities range from mild to fatal, depending upon the nature of the injuries inflicted. As many as 37% of homosexuals (more than 1 of every 3) have practiced some form of sadism.


    3. Mental Health

    Multiple studies have identified high rates of psychiatric illness, including depression, drug abuse and suicide attempts, among selfprofessed gays and lesbians. Gay activists argue that mental illness is induced by other people’s homophobia and intolerance.

    But that argument is undermined by an extensive study in the Netherlands — a country of legalized same-sex marriages where GLBTs are widely accepted. The Dutch study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, found a high rate of psychiatric disease associated with same-sex sex. Gay men were much more likely to experience major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia and obsessive compulsive disorder.

    Lesbians were more often diagnosed with major depression, social phobia or alcohol dependence. The researchers found “that homosexuality is not only associated with mental health problems during adolescence and early adulthood…but also in later life.”

    Depression and drug abuse, in turn, can lead to reckless sexual behavior, even among those who understand the deadly risks, such as older professional gay men.


    4. Life Span

    The only epidemiological study (from Vancouver, Canada) to date on the life span of gay men concluded that gay and bisexual men lose up to 20 years of life expectancy. Compare that to cigarette smokers, who lose on average about 13.5 years of life expectancy. The Canadian study concluded that the probability of a 20-year-old gay or bisexual man living to 65 years was only 32%, compared to 78% for men in general.

    5. Monogamy

    Monogamy means long-term sexual fidelity. The most extensive survey of sex in America found that a vast majority of heterosexual committed couples are faithful: 94% of married people and 75% of cohabiting people had only one partner in the prior year.

    But long-term sexual fidelity is rare among GLB (gay, lesbian, bisexual) couples, particularly among gay males. Even during the coupling period, many gay men do not expect monogamy. One study reported that 66% of gay couples reported sex outside the relationship within the first year, and nearly 90% if the relationship lasted 5 years.

    The average gay or lesbian relationship is also short lived. In one study, only 15% of gay men and 17.3% of lesbians had relationships that lasted more than 3 years. In other words, whatever data we have show very little long-term monogamy in GLB relationships, which then raises the question of why homosexuals are so insistent on their “unions” being legalized as marriages.

    Dear questioner, thank you very much for having confidence in us, and we hope our efforts, which are purely for Allah's Sake, meet your expectations.

    In the first place, we would like to stress that spouses are permitted to look at each other’s naked body, especially when this is done during intimacy. However, being nude in front of each other unnecessarily should be avoided.

    In this regard, we would like to cite for you the following fatwa issued by Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America:

    There is no `awrah (parts of the body to be hidden) between the husband and wife. The husband and wife can be naked in front of each other. However, Islam urges human beings to observe haya' or modesty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, "Modesty (haya') is part of faith." (Ibn Majah)
    Thus, one should not be nude unnecessarily. The husband and wife can take their clothes off in front of each other to enjoy their sexual relations, but after that they should cover themselves.

    It is not good to walk around the house naked, even in one's privacy and not in front of others. It is absolutely haram to be nude in front of other people unless it is before the doctor for medical examination and treatment only.
